Sometimes it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. But smart fly fishers read the water and look for trout feeding on nymphs and dry flies in very discrete places on a river or pond. It’s no accident that these “lucky” anglers are not in the right spot when fish are feeding.

This video shows you one of those places. Note that Dave Jensen is not creeping around the edges of the pond but stays high above the water. It’s the only place from where he can see these fish, but by using a nearby bush and keeping his movements to a minimum, he can still stalk these wild brown trout without spooking them. We can all learn by watching how many false casts he makes to each fish—never more than one false cast before he delivers the fly.
