Tip of the week
For most hunters, this comes a little late for this year, but if you’re not saving the neck of your big game kill, you’re missing out on what I consider to be the best eating of all (even better than the backstrap or tenderloins). A seasoned neck roast, browned in olive oil in a big skillet and then covered and slow-baked with onions, carrots and potatoes is not only delicious and moist, but fun to serve at an informal dinner. Basically, all rules of etiquette are forgiven as guests dig in with knives and forks, removing the delectable meat form the bone.
Braggin’ rights
Two Washington sport fish records fell during one late September weekend when Mike Benoit of Gig Harbor caught a 37.98-pound opah (also called a moonfish or sunfish) and Erik Holcomb of Lynden caught a 49.5-pound blue shark. Both fish were caught out of Westport.
Overheard
As part of their plan to simplify fishing regulations in Washington, WDFW is considering eliminating spiny ray size and bag limits on Banks, Potholes and Moses Lake. Many angling groups are appalled at the possibilities. “We’ve spent over 30 years trying to nurse the crappie fisheries back to pre-Mount St. Helens levels,” one prominent fishing guide said. “A no-limit fishery would decimate the population in four years.” He is hoping enough anglers will write letters and emails to convince the game department to rethink the idea.
Heads up
The Gene Fink Winter Chinook Derby on Lake Coeur d’Alene will not be held this year because of a lack of the larger fish. Fins and Feathers sporting goods in Coeur d’Alene says there are lots of 16- to 19-inch chinook in the lake, but the fish must be 20 inches to keep. The tournament had an even larger minimum.
Fly fishing
Nymphs or streamers will be your best bet now on the Big Spokane, but soft hackle caddis pupa and Copper Johns will find fish. Fishing is decent rather than great, with the best luck coming after noon.
