Mobile Game Lets You Snoop Through Someone’s Lost Phone
Accidental Queens’ latest game allows a player to explore someone’s phone to discover how they went missing
Many people fear losing their phone as they walk around from place to place throughout their day. Their smartphone contains a treasure trove of personal information, things they wouldn’t want anyone to get their hands on. But, what if they were given the chance to go through someone else’s phone? French video game development studio Accidental Queens created a mobile game called A Normal Lost Phone earlier this year where the player freely goes through an unknown smartphone, learning about the owner and their personal history. They recently developed a sequel called Another Lost Phone: Laura’s Story that released on September 21 where they touch on darker subject matter than their first game.
The goal of both games focuses on the player exploring this stranger’s smartphone, reading the owner’s texts, emails, and having unrestricted access to their photos. In the first game the player had the opportunity to act as the phone’s owner, Sam, and send messages on his behalf with people believing it was him. The developers did away with this feature for the sequel. This time around they wanted players to focus on the mystery of the plot by reading Laura’s messages to discover how and why she went missing.
The player doesn’t experience a joy-filled ride while exploring Laura’s. They learn about some dark subject matter that Laura wouldn’t want anyone to know about, that she’d rather not share with the world. Accidental Queen tries to show the player the importance of a smartphone, and also to teach them about the reality of abusive relationships.
Prior to the start of the game, the developers post a warning to the players informing them to never mishandle a person’s actual phone. This message shows the developers at Accidental Queens understand the emotional weight of a smartphone and how much a person puts into their digital device. A smartphone acts as something much more than a communication device. It provides a small glimpse into a person’s true nature they would rather not share with the world.
For anyone interested in Laura’s Story, they may purchase from Steam, the Apple store, or find it on the Google Play store for $2.99.
