Harvey Weinstein kicked out of motion picture academy

Disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein was tossed out of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in an emergency session Saturday of the organization’s board.

The expulsion comes after reports by the New York Times and the New Yorker magazine detailed numerous allegations of sexual harassment and rape against Weinstein. He has denied the accusations. Weinstein was fired by the board of the Weinstein Co.

In a statement, the Academy board of governors said the virtually unprecedented decision was meant to send a message that “the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.”

The Academy said the board voted “well in excess of the required two-thirds majority” required to immediately expel Weinstein.
