Open Season: Steelhead run in Salmon River is a true highlight of autumn season

One of the many wonderful things about autumn, within a six-hour ride from Southeastern Massachusetts, is the steelhead run in the Salmon River and other smaller rivers in New York, which flow into Lake Ontario. The fall spawning run of king salmon, also called Chinooks, which leave the lake and travel up the rivers to spawn and then die, is what triggers the steelhead to follow so they can gorge on their eggs.
